Three Things to Expect During a Long Beach Divorce
Deciding to end a marriage is one of the most significant decisions you will make. Understanding what lies ahead helps you prepare:
- A six-month minimum timeline. California law (Family Code §2339) requires a mandatory six-month waiting period from the date the respondent is served before any divorce can be finalized. This applies regardless of how quickly the parties reach agreement.
- Property and debt division. Every asset and debt acquired during the marriage must be addressed — real estate, bank accounts, retirement accounts, vehicles, and debts alike. California's community property laws (Family Code §760) generally require equal division of marital assets.
- Children's issues if applicable. If you have children, custody, visitation, and child support must be resolved — either by agreement or court order. These issues have their own timeline and process that runs parallel to the rest of the divorce proceedings.
Long Beach Divorce Courts
Long Beach divorce cases are filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court. Furubotten Law, APC represents Long Beach clients at the appropriate Los Angeles County courthouse based on where the parties reside, with the exception of the Stanley Mosk Courthouse in downtown Los Angeles (Hill Street) and the Lancaster/Antonovich Courthouse.
